vajrapani poster

Vajrapani is an interactive sand table instillation for 1-4 persons.

It is an experience of interconnections in the present moment. A group meditation on impermanence and cooperation, which encourages the participants to experience their individual and group presence as a natural kind of magic. An observance of fleeting images which parallel the passing of time, like a digital sand mandala, it is the meeting point of a crossroads, and a compass to find our way back - to where we are - which is to say... Here.

Since everything is but an apparition,
Perfect in being what it is,
Having nothing to do with
good or bad,
Acceptance or rejection
You might as well burst out laughing!

Vajrapani - How it works; Space is Patterns of Relationship

4 cushions positioned at cardinal points of the table are embedded with conductive fabric and act as an off/on switches, detecting the presence of a participant. If the cushion detects a participant then the area directly in front of them becomes active in the form of a colorful video triangle.

Q Prox Sensors embedded beneath the sand detect capacitance from the participants hand which acts as a trigger to toggle video in that quadrant of the table. There are two videos in each triangle
quadrant. The videos depict shifting abstract color fields of light which emulate patterns of symmetry occurring in nature. The qprox sensors allow the participants to readily play with the surface of the table, moving their hands in and over the sand. This provides a sense of immediate gratification as well as wonder at their ability to perform the hypnotic and magical act of changing the video through simply waving their hand over sand. There is also a slightly hyperactive quality to the video. The act of switching them back and forth with no apparent motivation to do so other than the addictive and seducing feeling of being able to. This is meant to be a subtle metaphor for the childlike nature of compulsion and restlessness in our everyday experience of mind.

When four people are seated around the table for 30 seconds, the triangles disappear and switch to either the Mandala image of Vajrapani or one of six quotes by poetic luminaries through out history commenting the fleeting and illusory nature of life. This “forced stillness” is imposed on the participants in order to interrupt the apparent divisions which the triangle quadrants seem to create between them. The table is now open and the space between them becomes center-less space. They themselves are now the true mandala of relationships.

After one minute the table projection fades back to the triangle video layer. The Mandala will continue to emerge every 30 seconds as long as four people are present to give it shape.
If not the table will remain with the triangles and the area in front of any cushion that is not occupied dissolve back to electric dust like particles.
